The origin of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) began before the country’s independence in 1957. The groundwork for the establishment of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), as it was initially called, was initiated a year prior to Independence particularly with respect to training a batch of eleven career diplomats to man it and the country’s diplomatic missions overseas. This pioneering batch was trained in Britain and Australia.

The MEA was modelled after the British Foreign Office, in line with the rest of the bureaucracy, which was patterned after the British Civil Service structure. In the very beginning, three officers divided the whole world among themselves as their individual geographical area of responsibility.

Malaysia initially had diplomatic missions in London, Washington, Canberra, New York, New Delhi, Jakarta and Bangkok. In 1963, there were fourteen (14) Malaysian missions and twenty-five (25) countries were represented in the country (four by way of concurrent accreditation).
